Have you ever noticed those cracking, snapping, and popping sounds in your joints? Yes? That's what we call crepitus. It can happen because of air bubbles in the joints, soft tissues around them, or when tendons move over bony parts.
It's not just during your daily activities – sometimes, even when you're just chilling particularly with symptomatic hypermobility, those sounds might make an appearance. And get this, in colder weather, your joint fluid thickens up like cream in the fridge, making things a bit creakier.
As we get older, our muscles change, becoming less elastic, smaller and not as strong. Tendons also get stiffer. All these things team up to create those joint noises. Most of the time, it's harmless and just a quirky part of life. But if your bigger bones like femurs, shoulders, ribs are involved and it starts to hurt, that's when it might be worth checking out.
Stay creaky, but not too much!
